ABOUT CLOTHS OF HEAVEN
CLOTHS OF HEAVEN is a compelling contemporary jazz performance by multi-award-winning vocalist, composer, and lyricist Sofija Knežević, transforming W. B. Yeats’s celebrated poem He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven into an intimate, sophisticated vocal-jazz interpretation.
At the center of the recording is Knežević’s extraordinary vocal performance defined by improvisational virtuosity, exceptional control, dynamic nuance, and deeply expressive phrasing. Rather than treating Yeats’s text as a conventional song lyric, Knežević uses the poetry as a framework for musical exploration, moving fluidly between composed melody, spontaneous interpretation, rhythmic freedom, and moments of striking vulnerability. Her command of color, articulation, dynamics, and space creates a performance in which the voice functions simultaneously as storyteller, improviser, and instrumentalist.
Cloths of Heaven demonstrates the expressive possibilities of contemporary jazz singing while remaining deeply connected to the tradition of jazz improvisation. Knežević’s interpretation is distinguished by its conversational phrasing and fearless emotional commitment, allowing the performance to evolve organically rather than simply reproduce a predetermined arrangement.
The recording’s production further supports this musical vision, preserving the intimacy, dynamic range, tonal detail, and immediacy of the performance. Every element serves the central artistic statement: a jazz vocalist using text, melody, improvisation, and silence to create an emotionally immersive performance.
Knežević is joined by an extraordinary pianist: Addison Frei. The music was recorded in New York.
